Number porting

Number porting means transferring phone numbers to a new provider. We arrange eligible transfers of local numbers, 1300/1800 numbers and blocks of direct-dial numbers, checking the number and account details first. Check before cancelling your current service or committing to a move date.

How a number transfer is planned

  1. 1

    List the numbers and account

Identify the numbers to move, the current provider, account holder and authority to request a transfer. A recent bill can help identify the service details.

  2. 2

    Check what is attached

Tell us about other numbers, internet, alarms, fax, EFTPOS or equipment sharing the service. Confirm the effect of moving or cancelling it with the relevant providers.

  3. 3

    Agree the new setup

Plan where calls should ring, caller ID and any suitable alternative destinations. Confirm transfer requirements and timing before agreeing the changeover.

  4. 4

    Transfer and check calls

Keep the existing service active until the transfer is confirmed. Plan checks of incoming and outgoing calls and the agreed call routing after the move.

What to send for a porting enquiry

  • The numbers you want to move, including any direct-dial ranges or 1300/1800 numbers
  • Current provider, account name and service address, plus a recent bill if available
  • Details of other services or equipment attached to the same account or lines
  • Where calls should go after the transfer and any critical business hours
  • Your move or preferred changeover date, with time for provider checks

Keeping your business numbers

Can every number be moved?

A transfer needs to be checked for the number type, existing service and receiving provider. Local numbers, 1300/1800 numbers and direct-dial ranges can have different requirements. Give us the complete number list so we can confirm eligibility rather than assuming every number will move.

Should we cancel the old service first?

No. Keep it active until the transfer is confirmed and check with the providers before cancelling any remaining services. Cancelling early can put the transfer at risk or affect other services on the account.

How long will the transfer take?

Timing depends on the providers, number type, correct account information and any linked services. We need to check these before giving an indicative schedule. A requested move date is not a confirmed transfer date.

Will callers notice the changeover?

There may be an interruption while providers complete the transfer. We discuss the expected changeover and whether suitable temporary call destinations or diversions are available. Do not assume an instant transfer or uninterrupted calls.

Can we keep numbers when moving premises or using several sites?

Tell us the existing and new addresses, all numbers and the proposed call routing. The team needs to check provider and number requirements, including any direct-dial range that must be handled together, before confirming the arrangement.
